Recently I watched a foreign film called Central Station. It is a sweet and interesting look into the undeniable yearning that mosts everyone has for their parents (regardless of how they treat you).
Of course, I was crying by the end of it. But once I got past getting a little "verklempt" I thought about why I almost always love foreign films. For me it is the eloquent and enduring beauty of a story well written/told.
- Cinema Paradiso
- Italian for Beginners
- Four Weddings and a Funeral
- Il Postino
- Gigli...oops that was not only not foreign, although I think we wish it was, it was also apparently not interesting
Although what is interesting about Gigli is that it starred Ben Affleck and Jennifer Jason Aniston/Lopez/Madonna or whoever.
Great stories endure. Sex, stars and sequels may sell (and in the end we're buying it so we're choosing it....) but they are forgotten. It's sort of neat that often, the foreign actors and actresses are chosen based on their talent not their "talent".
Finally, it's interesting to me (since Central Station is a Brazilian movie) that City of God was a decent movie but a sign that western cowardice in developing entertainment is apparently communicable.
