My wonderful daughter is in Ireland with her mom, stepdad and sister. Every year her school has a select group of kids get in front of the whole school and give a memorized speech.
She happen to lose the copy of her speech while she was there. Virtually without thinking I told her I'd get it and instinctively I got in the car to go get it after hanging up.
It felt great to do it for her. Granted our relationship is unique in my life as Zoe is my only child. However, I learned that I have the capacity to give without thinking twice.
Given that, it seems to me that I can make that happen in the rest of my life. I know I can do it, now I just have to. There''s no good reason not to.
You have huge expectations of yourself!
I have learned recently that I am a generous person (as well as being greedy - one can be both). There are often times of giving without thinking twice. But just as often, I have to think two, three, or twenty times before I give.
I think that's okay. Having the option of saying no makes saying yes that much more meaningful. And learning to discriminate over appropriate and inappropriate giving is a practice I need to make good, healthy choices.
This is just my experience.

Some people are naturally giving, but I also think it's something that can be learned through practice. By consciously practicing the art of giving, it develops into a habit that just happens naturally from that point forward.

It definately helps if you are brought up to be a giving person, but I also agree it's something that can be practiced.
The feeling of giving is awesome, and makes you feel much better about yourself.
Great post
